What is state charitable solicitation registration?

Nonprofits are held to a high standard of government regulation and public scrutiny. And that is with good reason! Eligible 501(c) nonprofits are exempt from federal corporate taxes and have access to public funding. These benefits are not typically available to for-profit businesses, so laws are in place to protect the public and ensure nonprofits do not abuse their financial advantages. The IRS and states all have requirements for nonprofits.

Why is state charitable solicitation registration compliance important?

While 501(c) nonprofits receive key financial benefits, the penalties for noncompliance can be serious. The IRS can revoke a nonprofit’s tax exemption and impose fines that can accrue daily. The states can administratively dissolve a nonprofit corporation and levy steep financial penalties. Perhaps worst of all, an organization can lose out on a grant or large donation because it has not kept itself in good standing.

Taking a proactive approach to compliance helps ensure the sustained success of the organization. The cost of staying compliant is small in comparison to the much larger costs of noncompliance. The saying, “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” could not be more true in this context.

What if I already made a gift to Fairmont State this year?

Thank you for being part of the amazing Fairmont State donor family! We appreciate your commitment and encourage you to make an additional gift of any size on February 29. We also need your help to promote Falcon Day of Giving to others by spreading the word on social media using #FalconsGive2024. We have created sample email and social media posts to help you do this more easily, which are located in the Ambassador Toolkit on the site.

Why does Fairmont State care about my participation?

The collective generosity of many multiplies to provide valuable dollars for scholarships, academic and athletic excellence and programs that strengthen the university’s mission. In addition, the added donors on Falcon Day of Giving will continue to help increase the overall giving participation rate, which effects the college's ranking in key recruitment publications such as U.S. News & World Report. Giving participation is a marker of alumni satisfaction. The higher the rankings, the more valuable the degree – so all Falcons – past, present, and future – benefit when more give back.

Is there a minimum or maximum donation I can make on Falcon Day of Giving?

Yes, there is a $5 minimum donation.

How will the donation be reported on my credit card?

Gifts made on Falcon Day of Giving will appear on donors' credit cards as GIVEGAB [Fairmont State].

Will my Falcon Day of Giving gift – if made in advance of 02.29.24 – help populate the leaderboards?

Yes! Gifts made in advance of the Day of Giving through falconsgive.fsufoundation.org (and in response to Day of Giving mailings) will be displayed on the leaderboard when it goes live at 12:00 a.m. on February 29, 2024.
